Magic by Joanne Sheppard

He was the cheapest magician I could book, slight and shabby. But the rabbit he conjured from his hat was the size of our coffee table, and when he made me vanish, my absence from the dusty velvet-lined cabinet apparent to the watching children, I dived with cormorants in smoothly sun-warmed waters. The children seemed blasé, but then, it’s not always adults who can’t see magic.
